What Makes Us Well?

Today, I’m watching a YouTube channel called The Scandinavian Fika.  It’s not a channel with a zillion videos, but these films are feeding my soul.  I highly recommend it.

A woman has gone into bakeries in Sweden and Norway and filmed the goings on in the kitchens.  It’s a lot of doughs, batters, breads, cookies, mousses, creams, and everything that could possibly be turned into a pastry or dessert.

There’s something about dough that I can’t explain.

In bread, it’s a balloon-like structure that requires hands that just know how to roll and shape.

In cake batter, it’s that smooth ripple that happens as the beaters are cutting through the mixture.  It carries a frequency of bliss and at the same time, a visceral feeling of deep comfort and contentment.

With creams, you can just feel the silky texture in your mouth even before taking the first bite.

And can someone please explain to me why cookie dough always tastes better than the baked product?  What is that?

For me, being a baker, these things make me well.  A kitchen full of baked goodies is one I want to be in.

I’ve decided I don’t want to waste anymore time with things that are neutral or God forbid, negative or give off a sense of uneasiness.

And baking is just one of the things in my wellness basket.  There are others in there too.

Like cut flowers and gardens, vintage dishes and silver, cats and kittens, travel to England and France, old hymns, farmers markets and beautiful fabrics.  Clean kitchen towels gently swaying in the breeze while drying on a clothes line. I could make a laundry list right here that’s as long as the day.

What would happen if we surrounded ourselves with the things, people and places we love or made a point of making time to do the things we love on a regular basis?

I believe our health would be balanced and whole.  Our nervous systems would be wonderfully stuck in a relaxed state instead of being frazzled and burned out.

If we slowed down long enough to enjoy the lovely people and things we already have in our lives, and created atmospheres of gladness and appreciation, we could extend our lives and live them out harmonious and happy.

What makes you well?  Use your imagination to see it.  Because when you can see it, you can create it, and design the life you’ve always wanted.
